Del Norte Revitalization Project has begun in downtown Del Norte

Rio Grande County— The Town of Del Norte and Colorado Department of Transportation along with contracting partner, RMS Utilities, Inc. will begin a Main Street Revitalization project on July 8, immediately following the July 4th holiday weekend. Construction will include new curb and gutter, sidewalks, ADA compliant curb ramps, pedestrian street lights, crosswalks, pavement markings, signage, drainage improvements, water service lines and fire hydrants alongside US Highway 160 (Grand Avenue) in the Town of Del Norte from Alder Street east to Cherry Street. The project is expected to be completed by January of 2025.

Travel Impacts

  • Working hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Crews will begin working on one block at a time.
  • Motorists will encounter partial lane and shoulder closures throughout the project work zone and in the intersections.
  • Vehicles, bikes and pedestrians should expect some travel impacts throughout the construction of this project. Pedestrians can expect sidewalk closures.
  • Access to business will be maintained, but may be temporarily altered.
  • Motorists are urged to watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.

Project Benefits

The project is part of CDOT’s Revitalizing Main Streets grant program that enhances transportation safety and strengthens the connection of people to main streets and central economic hubs.

“We are pleased to be the recipient of this grant program,” said Mayor Shelly Burnett “The project in downtown Del Norte will encourage physical activity and enhance our local economy through several improvements to the town’s infrastructure.”

  1. New Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sidewalks, curb ramps and crosswalks will make pedestrian crossings accessible to people with disabilities, required by federal law
  2. Improvements along the corridor will provide safer access and mobility for residents and visitors
  3. New lighting allows better visibility for locals, businesses, and travelers
  4. Colored concrete to add esthetics for Del Norte’s  business district
